Chapter Six

Urban slept so peacefully and silently that it was almost terrifying. Will couldn’t stop staring at him. The sun filtering through the curtains kept him awake. Plus, his thoughts raced. He plotted and planned. Will already had a dozen ideas on how to get started on finding Urban a donor. First, they needed to get married. Urban needed the financial and sympathetic support of his last name. The Freeman family had kept football alive in California for sixty years. That mattered to the fans. He could use the team to drive a search for a matching living donor. Will would do whatever it took. Unfortunately, he had a feeling convincing Urban to marry him would be the hardest part. Will had spent too much time arguing he didn’t want it. He feared he might have tainted that beautiful dream for Urban forever.

Will stared at the ring box on the kitchen counter where Urban had left it before storming out. Why had he said no? He had panicked, really. Will hadn’t seen the proposal coming. While Urban had dropped hints about marriage in the past, Will thought he had made his feelings clear on the matter. He never dreamed Urban would drop to one knee. Before he could stop himself, he grabbed the box and opened it. A gorgeous diamond band set in platinum stared up at him. It was beautiful and tasteful in a way that couldn’t be more him if he picked it out himself. No one knew him the way Urban did. Will pulled out the ring and slipped it on. It fit perfectly. It felt… Will swallowed. Fuck. He had just crushed Urban, and it turned out he wanted this too. They were meant to be. Urban was his soulmate. Will had known that since they met. Their life together was as close to perfect as possible. He had no idea why he would hurt Urban by not letting him have this one thing that was obviously so important to him. Goddamn it. He was wrong. Will shouldn’t have let his shitty first marriage ruin the beautiful relationship he shared with Urban. Urban deserved so much better from him.

With the ring still on his finger, Will grabbed his keys and headed out. He couldn’t get to Urban fast enough. Will needed to make things right five minutes ago. He had to shout his love from the rooftops. Urban was his whole universe. They would get married. Fuck the past. Urban was nothing like his cheating ex-wife. He wasn’t with Will for what he could get. For the first time in Will’s life, Will had someone who loved him for him. He would cherish that until death.

By the time he reached Urban Mixer, Will practically jogged through the restaurant, looking for Urban. A hostess pointed toward the freezer. Will skidded around the corner and froze. Urban held another man. They were kissing. The image seared into Will’s brain like a hot knife and his heart shattered so quickly, he couldn’t believe it didn’t make a sound.
